A crane at a New York construction site caught fire Wednesday and partially collapsed onto Bmahtan Street, injuring four bystanders and two firefighters, city authorities said. Firefighters and rescue crews arrived at the scene, between 11th and 7th Avenues, when the crane collapsed, apparently in response to a fire before it collapsed.

The crane collapsed at around 30:<> A.M., while many were on their way to work. Footage posted on social media showed the crane hitting a skyscraper before it fell apart and its remains scattered everywhere as thick, black smoke rose from its control compartment. The NYPD urged people to avoid the area and blocked nearby streets, causing traffic congestion in the nearby Lincoln Tunnel.

Authorities said the six injured people suffered minor injuries when the top of the crane, the 16-ton bomb it was carrying, and the glass and debris from the damaged structure scattered across the street. The crane operator, who was not injured, tried to extinguish the fire before exiting the control compartment, but officials said the heat weakened the cable that helped support the crane arm — which likely led to its collapse.
