Niger's President Mohammed Bazum was held for hours on Wednesday by his presidential guards inside his palace in Niger's capital, Niamey. A group of soldiers took control of national television broadcasts and said President Zoom had been removed from power.

The elections in which Bazum rose to the presidency were the country's first transition to democracy. This follows four military revolutions that have taken place in the country since 1960. The US administration called for the release of Bazum, considered an ally in the Western world. The European Union and France condemned the coup.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinkin said: "I spoke with the President on Zoom this morning and made it clear that the United States supports him unequivocally as a democratically elected president. We call for his immediate release. We condemn any attempt at a coup by force."
