2023-07-28T16:33:23.530Z

Highlights: Two teachers have been forced to leave their school in Burg, East Germany. The students had been drawing swastikas on their desks and shouting Nazi slogans. "We had no choice but to leave as we no longer felt safe," says one of the teachers, Laura Temin. The other, Max Teske, says he was forced to quit his job because of the 'unbearable' atmosphere in the school. The teachers are now looking for a new school in the town of Burg, which has a population of around 4000.

Burg is a charming village in East Germany, distinguished by UNESCO for the richness of its biosphere. Canoes ply the winding River Spree and a long line of tourists stretches past the glacier on the main street. In the town's school, students engrave swastikas on desks, draw figures waving the Nazi salute and during lessons, shout "Arbeit macht frei", the sinister motto hanging on the perimeter wall of the Auschwitz camp.

The hotel micro-industry and part of Burg's population - 4000 inhabitants - prefer not to pay attention to these incidents and blend into their postcard landscape. But for Max Teske and Laura Temin, the atmosphere has become so unbreathable in the Mina Witkojc Schule, that its two teachers have publicly denounced the stranglehold of the extreme right in their school. And war tired, ended up asking for their transfer.
