The extraordinary renaissance of the Aubusson tapestry

Highlights: Tapestry of the Middle Ages is being re-imagined for the 21st century. The work is being called the "Tapestries of the Age of Enlightenment" It is the work of a group of artists who have been inspired by the works of J.R. R. Tolkien. It is being shown at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. The exhibition is expected to last until the end of the year, with plans for a second show in London in 2015. INVESTIGATION - By imagining a grandiose tribute to George Sand and weaving works from Tolkien's novels or Miyazaki's films, the Cité internationale is anchored in the twenty-first century.


In Creusois' memory, we had never known such a busy month of June. At least since the Cité internationale de la tapisserie exists in Aubusson. Two important falls of trade and the revelation of an ambitious project for the next three years have definitively highlighted the extraordinary renaissance of the Aubusson tapestry. The English writer Tolkien, the Japanese filmmaker Miyazaki and the writer George Sand form this unusual triptych by which this art is anchored today in the twenty-first century. Minds may evolve - we now see in the City parents pulled by their children who want to "see the tapestries of Miyazaki" - but the general public still tends too often to associate weaving with the Middle Ages and its famous Lady with the Unicorn, exhibited at the Cluny Museum in Paris.

Throughout the summer, it is at the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, on the banks of the Seine in Paris, that you have to go and see the small revolution: Ashitaka relieves his demonic wound, tapestry...
