Opposition leader Yair Lapid said Sunday during his speech to the Knesset that the only thing that will allow a return to dialogue is a freeze on the legal reform for a year and a half. Lapid demanded that the freeze be passed by legislation in the Knesset. The law stipulates that they will not deal with the legal issues in the plots until the end of the deadline.
During his speech, Lapid said: "My job, and the role of the entire opposition, is not to arrange visits to the White House for Netanyahu, and not to reassure the rating agencies that Netanyahu lied to them. If the government wants to reach broad agreements, it must be proven. As long as there is no legislative freeze, there is no point and no sense to talk about other laws or agreements, because it is quite clear that the government will run away again at the last minute.
Lapid announces the explosion of negotiations
In an interview with Israel Hayom over the weekend, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich referred to the compromise talks, saying, "Even in the last 24 hours before the vote, we looked for a way to do something by agreement. The opposition has set an illegitimate threshold condition for freezing the legislation for 15 months. Unlike a thousand thousand differences, even the Palestinians do not set threshold conditions for entering negotiations. The opposition said: Stop so we can just go into the room to see if we can even reach an agreement. This is an illegitimate condition. We agreed to freeze the legislation until December 31 in order to enter into a dialogue, but no one agreed to one day beyond that."
