Economy Minister Nir Barkat met Monday with Moldova's ambassador to Israel, Alexander Roitman, with the aim of launching a free trade agreement between the two countries.

Barkat and Roitman believe that the agreement will lead to growth of both economies. Moldova, located between Ukraine and Romania, exports programming, food products, textiles and footwear to Israel. Israeli exports to Moldova mainly include plastics, rubber, machinery, chemical products, precious stones and ready-made food products.

Barkat said after the meeting: "This is a significant milestone in our relations with Moldova. We are confident that a free trade agreement will serve our mutual economic interests and create new opportunities for growth and cooperation."

"It will help balance trade, it will be easier for goods to reach ports on both sides," said Ambassador Roitman, who also made sure to cool enthusiasm in his country: "We will gather to discuss details, usually such things take time but we hope that the talks will produce wonderful results."

Barkat and Roitman discussed various aspects of the agreement, with both sides expressing willingness to expedite it. According to Roitman's optimistic forecasts, the agreement between Moldova and Israel will be signed within two months at most.
