Cost of living: An examination of the average shopping basket price conducted by the Consumer Council shows that over the past year, its price has increased by 5.2%. In contrast, between June and July 2023, its average price remained unchanged. The tested basket contains 770 products. Significant gaps were found in the prices of municipal chains and discount chains.

Although between last July and June, there was no change in the average basket, there are products that did increase significantly in price. These products include the prices of fruits, fresh chicken products, juices and frozen. For example, the price of a kilo of banana increased by 24% over the past month and by 10% during the year. A kilo of avocados increased by 22% in July, and by 103% compared to last year.

In the category of discount chains examined, the Rami Levy chain was found to be the cheapest, followed by Carrefour chains - the Tiv Taam chain was found to be the most expensive in this category. In the urban supermarket category, Pulitzer was found to be the cheapest, while Shufersal Express was the most expensive, with a gap of 10% in the average basket price.

The differences between the prices of products can be large, and even reach differences of 600%, the averages can reach large gaps, when the same product can reach gaps of over 600%. For example, the price of dry garlic in the Shefa chain was NIS 1.9, and sold at the Super Yoda chain for NIS 14.2. Another example is Gillette Fusion razors (16 units), which at Super-Pharm sold for NIS 249.8, while at Shufersal Deal their price was NIS 164.9 – a difference of NIS 85 and 51%.

The Consumer Council said: "The number of stores in the segment of municipal chains is the largest. The gap between them and the same basket is about 10%. Therefore, even when choosing a chain to complete a purchase and not for the large purchase, before it is very worthwhile to compare prices between the various chains, since an examination by the Consumer Council shows that the price gaps are high."

Prices were checked on three dates. Prices are average data including promotions, excluding credit promotions. The data is from networks and sub-networks that broadcast to Price's website. Statistical accompaniment: Dr. Or Katz, Ashkelon Academic College.
