A blow to former minister Yuli Tamir: The Council for Higher Education (CHE) instructed her at a meeting held today (Tuesday) to relinquish her salary and position as a director of Elbit and as a lecturer at Oxford – due to her position as president of Beit Berl Academic College.

Former Minister of Education Yuli Tamir is a busy woman, she has served in recent years as president of Beit Berl Academic College. Alongside this, she also had other occupations – she served as a director of Elbit Defense Company and as a lecturer at the prestigious Oxford University in England.

However, according to the guidelines of the CHE, which Yuli Tamir even headed (the Minister of Education is also the CHE chairman), stipulate that the president of an academic institution will occupy this position full-time and only. In other words, Tamir, as president of Beit Berl, was not allowed to deal with other things for salary.

The CHE instructed the president of the college, Prof. Tamir, to cease her additional activities, contrary to the PBC/CHE directives. During the discussion, Elbit received confirmation that Prof. Tamir's term at the company will not be renewed for another year. Moreover, Prof. Tamir is supposed to convey a commitment to the CHE professional staff that she will no longer serve in any body other than Beit Berl Academic College.

It was also decided that Prof. Tamir must terminate her activities at Oxford University and submit approval to the CHE within 14 days. It should be noted that the faculty at Beit Berl Academic College is currently waging a struggle against Tamir, they have even complained about academic and administrative irregularities in the institution, among other things, they claim, due to the absence of the president for teaching at Oxford University.

The CHE said that it had decided to contact the Ministry of Finance's Salary Commissioner to examine the deviations from the CHE-PBC guidelines carried out by Prof. Tamir while working in other jobs while working as president of Beit Berl Academic College.

According to CHE Chairman Minister Yoav Kish: "Beit Berl President Yuli Tamir violated the guidelines in a clear and conscious manner that is unequivocal. Therefore, today at the meeting of the Council for Higher Education, a decision was passed that sends a clear message - we will not allow anyone to violate the CHE's guidelines in a predatory and blatant manner, I welcome the decision and hope that such cases will not be repeated."

Dozens protest Minister Kish: "You do not give due weight to academic research"

Prof. Yuli Tamir said in response: "It is clear to all that this is a political persecution of Minister Kish who, instead of promoting education in Israel, is pursuing professionals who oppose his and his colleagues' attempted regime coup. The attempt to intimidate professionals is the destruction of Israeli democracy."

Prof. Tamir said she is proud that she has been teaching at Oxford University and its international academic standing for many years, and is concerned that the current government's policy is cutting us off from the world's leading academic institutions.
