On the night of Wednesday 5 to Thursday 6 July 2023, a violent fire broke out in the small town of Puy-de-Serre, located in the south-east of the Vendée department. Nine people had been rescued and relocated as the damage caused in six dwellings had been extensive. This incident had taken place after a similar precedent occurred about twenty days earlier in a nearby site, where a hangar and two vehicles had gone up in smoke.
In this town of just over 320 inhabitants, this chain of events and their geographical proximity were enough to arouse the suspicions of the authorities who had opened an investigation for arson. After several weeks of searching, the gendarmes succeeded.

Trial in September
On Monday, July 31, they apprehended the man he suspected of being the alleged perpetrator of the two fires. "The individual, resident of the commune, acknowledged during his custody to have voluntarily caused these two disasters," says the gendarmerie of Vendée.
In the process, he was presented to the public prosecutor of La Roche-sur-Yon. Pending his trial, scheduled for September, he has been remanded in custody.
