Severe storms cover Italy. Hailstorms and supercell thunderstorms cause temperatures to drop rapidly. An accident on the Mediterranean is looming.

Update from 5 August, 10.20 a.m.: Even on Saturday morning, no all-clear for the storm in Italy: The eye of Cyclone Circe continues to have its sights firmly set on the centre of the country in southern Europe, reports meteorologist Mattia Gussoni. The dangerous storm is only slowly moving across the country before it possibly reaches the Balkan states via the Adriatic Sea. "In the next 24 hours we still have bad weather with strong thunderstorms," Gussoni told the weather portal iLMeteo.it.

In addition to the large amounts of precipitation and the rapidly falling temperatures, Hurricane Circe continues to threaten southern Italy and the center of the country, especially with strong winds and "violent thunderstorms". Circe "turned summer into autumn for a few days," the meteorologist points out. A significant improvement is then in sight from Sunday morning, towards the middle of next week, summer could return with sun and warm temperatures.

Weather in Italy: Hurricane "Circe" covers the entire country with violent storms

First reported on August 4, 23:12 p.m.: Rome – While Austria, Slovenia and Croatia are already on a severe weather alert, Italy also fears new severe thunderstorms and a rapid drop in temperature. The southeast and the entire Adriatic belt of the country are particularly affected. Severe thunderstorms are expected there as early as Friday evening due to the new storm front.

Antonio Sanò, the founder of the website iLMeteo.it, announced the arrival of Atlantic cyclone Circe in central-northern Italy as early as noon on Friday and then move from north to south during the day. In the south, maximum attention will continue on Saturday, between this late evening and tomorrow, especially on the lower Tyrrhenian Sea, local storms cannot be ruled out, according to the weather expert.

Severe weather in Italy: Severe hailstorms and thunderstorm supercells expected

As far as the possibility of local thunderstorm supercells with severe hailstorms is concerned, the most vulnerable areas were Italy, Lombardy, eastern Piedmont, Veneto and Friuli, especially during the storms. Meanwhile, similar thunderstorm cells could move over Campania, Calabria and Sicily during the night. According to Sanò, however, it is difficult to say where and when exactly the strongest storms will occur in Italy.

On Saturday, the weather will remain unstable, but a winter landscape like the one left behind by storms in Baden-Württemberg is probably not to be expected. In the first half of the day, storms over the Ionian sector to the east cannot be ruled out, while in the afternoon the greatest risk of severe weather is limited over the Adriatic belt from the Marche to Puglia.

Temperature drop after storm in Italy: migrant boats probably in distress – "do not survive the night"

After the storms in Italy, which cannot be compared with the supercell, which brought huge chunks of hail in northern Italy, there could be a drop in temperature of up to ten degrees Celsius on Saturday, the expert continued about the weather outlook in Italy. In the mid-north, lows of around 10 to 15 degrees in the plains and highs in the south, dropping from 37 to 40 degrees on Friday to 27 to 29 degrees Celsius – a drop of 10 degrees in 24 hours. Autumn arrives in Italy with the abrupt change in the weather.

Meanwhile, the alarm phone does not stand still. Apparently, due to the devastating weather conditions, twenty small boats with hundreds of migrants on board may be in distress at sea, as they are at the mercy of the high waves. They set off from the Tunisian coast between yesterday and this morning and were surprised by the rapidly deteriorating weather conditions in the Mediterranean. Hence the NGO's desperate appeal to the Italian authorities: "Start a major rescue operation, otherwise these people will not survive the night," according to the Italian daily La Republicca.

In addition to the storms, Italy discusses the "barbarian scandal" that resulted in the beheading of a historic statue by German influencers, as well as the balloon "trend" that an Italian mayor is opposing, or the death of the Harry Potter publisher in a boat accident on the Amalfi Coast.
