Three people were hospitalized after a passenger train derailed a passenger train in eastern Sweden on Monday (August 7th) caused by the collapse of an embankment itself due to heavy rains, police said.
Two of its four cars left the tracks near the town of Hudiksvall shortly after 12.30pm. The train, which was carrying some 120 people, was heading to Sundsvall. "It was determined that the heavy rains had undermined the embankment of the railway which collapsed," police said in a statement. "At present, three people have been taken to hospital, the severity of their injuries is unknown," the source said.
Red Flood Alerts
Sweden's national meteorological agency SMHI had issued several "yellow alerts" on Monday, warning of high winds, flooding and heavy rain in several areas. It also issued red alerts for flooding for Tuesday and Wednesday.
IHMS alerts range from "yellow" to "orange" and "red". Meanwhile, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute warned of "extremely heavy rains" in neighbouring southern Norway. "In many places, this rainfall will be among the heaviest in the last 25 years," he said.
