Special prosecutor Jack Smith proposed Thursday, August 10, that the trial of former US President Donald Trump for his alleged fraudulent attempts to reverse the result of the 2020 election be held from January 2024.
The judge who will preside over the proceedings in federal court in Washington, Tanya Chutkan, has set August 28 for a hearing to determine the date of the trial. It gave the prosecution until 10 August and 17 August for the defence to formulate their proposals.
The prosecutor proposed the date of January 2, 2024
The special prosecutor proposed Thursday in his argument addressed to the judge the date of January 2, 2024, estimating that the trial "should not last more than four to six weeks".
This date "represents an appropriate balance between the defendant's right to prepare his defence and the strong public interest in a speedy trial," in such an emblematic case, in which a former president is accused of undermining the foundations of federal institutions, argues Jack Smith.
