Stinging pests are a problem for many holidaymakers and locals on Sylt. Where they are most annoying and what helps against stings.
Sylt – The North Sea island of Sylt not only has beautiful beaches to offer, but also flowering heathland, especially in August, which invites you to take a walk. But the enjoyment of nature is disturbed in some places by stinging pests. It buzzes and buzzes on Sylt when swarms of mosquitoes rise from the meadows and go in search of food. The humidity and warmth of the last few days have allowed them to hatch en masse. There is one place that seems to be particularly bad.
Warmth after rain: ideal conditions for mosquitoes
After many had already written off the summer as a "total failure", the warmth is now returning to the north. But there is a small downer: The summer warmth after the rainy last few weeks offers ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. "Due to the heavy rain, ponds or puddles have formed, which are ideal for laying eggs," says NABU expert Julian Heiermann. "This can still be a very mosquito-rich summer."
Holidaymakers on the North Sea island of Sylt can already confirm this. In a Facebook group on the island of Sylt, they share their experiences with the pests that are currently appearing en masse in some places. "Well, I think they're tough this year. My husband is totally stabbed and have already had several stitches himself," reports a vacationer. "It's really heavy this year due to all the rainfall, especially when there is no wind," another user adds.

"You can't stop": mosquitoes come en masse
Not all places on the North Sea island are affected. "No mosquito plague in Wenningstedt," writes one user on Facebook. Another has had the same experience: "I was there last week - zero mosquitoes". It seems to be particularly bad at the Rantum Basin, a nature reserve that is home to many waterfowl. In the immediate vicinity is one of the beautiful campsites on Sylt, where mosquitoes have afflicted many a guest. "Come to Rantum and you won't find a body part that hasn't been pricked," says a holidaymaker on Sylt, describing his experience.
But also at the beach crossings further north there are a lot of stinging pests. "As soon as you leave the beach in Dikjen Deel and cross the dune, they pounce on you," reports a reporter from kreiszeitung.de, who is currently on Sylt. "All you can do is run to your bike and start speeding." But it is also fierce on the cycle path between Dikjen Deel and the beach oasis. "A mosquito flew into my eye while riding my bike, but I couldn't stop to remove it, otherwise I would have been totally bitten".
Mosquito plague on Sylt: What helps against mosquitoes and mosquito bites?
What can be done about the blood-sucking troublemakers? After all, you don't want to barricade yourself in your holiday apartment all day during your summer holiday on Sylt. On the balcony or in the garden, the Plectranthus plant helps against mosquitoes not only in summer. However, you don't have them with you on holiday. Fortunately, there are other ways to keep the pests at bay. The classic mosquito spray, for example. If you don't want to rely on chemicals, you can rub yourself with lavender oil.

And if you do get caught, there are various home remedies for mosquito bites, for example onions or lemons. If allergic reactions such as extreme swelling occur, you should definitely visit a pharmacy. "At times, we had to use anti-allergic tablets plus ointment with cortisone," reports a Sylt vacationer. If you are planning your holiday or a day trip to Sylt now, you should definitely not forget the anti-mosquito repellent.
