Kita construction site is at a standstill - opening may be delayed by a year

Highlights: The completion of the daycare center on Nonnenwaldstraße in Penzberg may be delayed by a whole year. Originally, the children's home was supposed to be completed in the summer of 2023. The date was then postponed to September 2024. The shell is almost finished, as are the two stairwells and the elevator shaft. The floors were to be built in timber construction in the next few months. But nothing will come of it for the time being. The two construction cranes are to be dismantled shortly as the downtime costs a lot of money.

The completion of the daycare center on Nonnenwaldstraße in Penzberg may be delayed by a whole year. Actually, the floors were to be built in timber construction in the next few months. But nothing will come of it. Construction will be suspended for the time being. It is possible that nothing will happen on the construction site this year.

Penzberg – In the fall of last year, the earthworks for the new daycare center began on Nonnenwaldstraße. In the meantime, the shell is almost finished: on the one hand, the basement, which occupies about half of the transverse building, and the floor slab, and on the other hand, the two stairwells and the elevator shaft that rise up on the construction site.

The rest of the building, it was decided, will be made of wood. This timber construction stage – actually a fast construction with prefabricated modules – was to follow after the reinforced concrete work. But nothing will come of it for the time being. The construction of the new daycare center will be shut down for the time being. The two construction cranes are to be dismantled shortly, as the downtime costs a lot of money.

"This means that we will not be finished by September 2024"

There is a delay in the project, confirmed city architect Justus Klement now on request. "This means that we will not be finished by September 2024." There is no updated schedule at the moment. However, Klement expects that it will take a good year longer until completion. It is expected to be summer 2025, explained the city architect, who had come to the construction site with project manager Sabine Porsch from the building construction department at the request of the local newspaper to explain the situation.

Timber construction: "Construction principle re-examined"

When asked what the reason for the dormant construction site is, city architect Klement explained that the timber construction had not yet been put out to tender. In the course of the preparation of this tender, it was determined "that the design principle needs to be re-examined". And "in the sense of an economical construction method", as he added. And: "We are currently in a legal dispute." We are "at the beginning of the clarification". The problem has been dealt with for several months. Klement did not want to comment on this in more detail. "But what can be said is that the construction site is not going any further." First you need a new plan, then the adapted tender follows.

Costs should not increase as a result of downtime

The most recent cost estimate was 13.5 million euros. However, the city does not expect the amount to increase because of the new situation. Of course, you don't save money when a construction site is at a standstill, Klement explained. However, the aim is to redesign precisely because "we want a more economical solution". It is hoped that this will result in savings, explained project manager Porsch. In what order of magnitude this could be, they could not say. However, a larger dimension is expected than the approximately 100,000 to 200,000 euros that the city council had decided on in savings at the end of 2022 (we reported).

Day care center is planned for seven groups

Three kindergarten groups are to move into the future daycare center between Nonnenwaldstraße and the sports stadium on the ground floor and four crèche groups on the upper floor. Space is also provided for the early intervention center of the "Kinderhilfe Oberland". Originally, the children's home was supposed to be completed in the summer of 2023. The date was then postponed to September 2024. There is definitely time pressure during the construction of the day care center. When it is finished, the groups from the container crèche on Birkenstraße will move there. In the meantime, the city of Penzberg also has to resort to container solutions in other places (at the Spatzennest day care center on Daserweg and at the AWO after-school care center on Winterstraße).
