On September 15, the husband of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden will be 50 years old. But Prince Daniel will only play a supporting role on this day.

Stockholm – It's not just any birthday that Prince Daniel of Sweden celebrates on September 15. The former fitness trainer and entrepreneur, who has been going through life with Crown Princess Victoria (50) for over 20 years, is 46 years old. However, the Swedes associate Daniel's date of birth with a completely different event, because on the very day on which his future son-in-law saw the light of day in 1973, Carl XVI Gustaf (77) was appointed King of Sweden.

"He certainly doesn't mind": Prince Daniel gives way to King Carl Gustaf on his birthday

While the 50th birthday is often used for a big celebration, the party for Prince Daniel unfortunately has to be cancelled – or at least postponed. September 15, 2023 is too significant for the Bernadotte dynasty, into which Daniel married when he tied the knot with Princess Victoria on June 19, 2010, in front of numerous royals such as Prince Albert II (65) and Charlène of Monaco (45). So far, no Swedish king has reigned as long as Carl Gustaf, and currently only Hassanal Bolkiah (77), the Sultan of Brunei, at the age of 55, and Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (83) at the age of 51 have a longer term of office among the heads of state worldwide.

Prince Daniel will take a step back on his own big day and pay tribute to his father-in-law together with Victoria and children Estelle (11) and Oscar (7). "Prince Daniel is celebrated – but not on this special day," said the chief court president, Marshal Fredrik Wersäll (72), according to Svensk Damtidning. However, it will probably not matter to the prince, who is considered modest and down-to-earth, as royal expert Herman Lindqvist explains.

Bad luck for Daniel to turn 50 on the king's historic jubilee, but he certainly doesn't mind postponing his own celebration for a day or a week.

50th Jubilee of King Carl XVI Gustaf: Celebrations and Guests

According to the aristocratic world, a memorial service will be planned for the anniversary day, which King Carl XVI Gustaf will attend with his family, followed by a large anniversary dinner at Drottningholm Palace, the private residence of Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden (79). One day later, a carriage ride by the royal couple through the Swedish capital Stockholm concludes the festivities.

In addition to Victoria and Daniel, Carl Gustaf's only son Carl Philip (44), his wife Sofia (38) and their sons Alexander (7), Gabriel (5) and Julian (2) will certainly take part in the 50th anniversary of the throne. It remains to be seen whether Princess Madeleine (41), who lives in the USA, will be present with her husband Chris O'Neill (49). Her move to Sweden, scheduled for August 2023, has been postponed. In the coming year, Madeleine, Chris and the children Leonore (9), Nicolas (8) and Adrienne (5) will finally break up their tents in Florida and return to the home of the Swedish princess.
