ZDF achieved a real ratings miracle on Thursday evening. Thanks to an old classic from the 1990s, the channel was ahead of the first one at primetime.

Mainz – ZDF achieved a surprising ratings success on Thursday evening (17 August) at primetime. According to DWDL, the number of viewers rose sharply during the entire duration of the broadcast from 20:15 p.m. onwards. Thus, the station was from about 21 p.m. far ahead of the first with "The Vienna Crime Story: Blind Investigated" or RTL with "Checked: How good is frozen food really?" But with which program was ZDF able to score so much?

Old classic becomes a ratings success for ZDF

No new production of the ZDF was shown, but a more than 30-year-old classic from the 1990s: "Pretty Woman" with Julia Roberts (55) and Richard Gere (73) attracted numerous viewers in front of the screens on Thursday (17 August). This is surprising, because according to the DWDL, fictional productions find it rather difficult to persuade noticeably new people to tune in over the course of their broadcast time. The reason for this is that the further the story progresses, the harder it becomes to find your way into the series or film.

On Thursday evening, however, the curve of "Pretty Woman" went steeply upwards. What could be the reason for this? "Pretty Woman" is a real film classic and already known to many people. This allows them to tune in later in the film, for example after the end of another program. This can also be observed in the course curve: At 21:45 p.m., after the end of the "Vienna thriller" in the first, the curve of the ZDF went steeply upwards again.

"Pretty Woman": Already a great success in 1990

"Pretty Woman" was released in 1990 and was already a huge success at the time. The romantic comedy, in which Richard Gere and Julia Roberts play a businessman and a prostitute who fall in love with each other, received the "People's Choice Award" in 1991, among others. The then 23-year-old Julia Roberts owes her breakthrough to the film and was nominated for the Oscar for "Best Actress" and awarded a "Golden Globe". The pop duo Roxette also won the Grammy for Best Soundtrack for their song "It Must Have Been Love".
