Murder scene in Kafr Qara, August 18, 2023 (according to social media section)
Health Minister Moshe Arbel addressed violence in Arab society on Friday, saying that the murder of the head of the Palestinian Authority is of the same severity as Rabin's. "The Shin Bet has been instructed to prepare an intelligence picture regarding threats against candidates running and candidates who are running," he told 103FM. "We, all of us, the State of Israel is shocked by a terrible murder that cannot be forgotten by a prime minister of Israel, a murder that harmed democracy - the murder of a mayor is of the same severity."
Arbel clarified that murder and crime in the context of elections means harming Israeli democracy and the State of Israel. "The murder, the crime, the violence in the context of preventing a candidate from running or running a particular candidate – all these things are a blow to Israel's resilience and security, and the Shin Bet's role is to enter the picture," he said. "In Abu Snan, the Shin Bet entered the picture and understood during the investigation that this was a criminal incident. At that moment, he stopped and left the work to the police. But once we know there's some context to the election, of course they should be inside."
On the rise in murders in Arab society, Arbel said it was a failure. "There is another challenge that the police pointed out and that is that the use of spyware immediately upon exposure of the incident was reduced to the point of being stopped by the police," he said. "In the police, it was stopped, and these were tools that made it possible to prevent those murders. The police do need to get more tools, and at the same time I don't think there's a single minister in the government who, God forbid, is happy to vape. Everyone seeks to prevent, reduce, eradicate this difficult phenomenon."
