Highlights: Munich singles want to go out alone – "The main thing is to get out, don't sour inside" Almost 1.5 million people live in Munich alone. Almost half a million people in Munich live in single households at the end of 2021. Even living alone does not necessarily mean being single at the same time – at least a large number of people should also feel the need to leave their own walls in the evening. In 2022, there were a total of 133,060 people, who should also have an interest in making new contacts.

Singles don't always have it easy: On Reddit, Munich residents discuss where you can still go out and make new friends, especially over 40s. The state capital is not in a good light.

Munich - "I flew out of my 20-year relationship a year ago. Now I'm sitting there on Saturday, wanting to go away, maybe meet people and wondering where I can go." With these words, a user starts a discussion on Reddit about ways to socialize in Munich in the evening. The 40-year-old questioner is not interested in finding a new relationship – he just wants to do something on his own and make new contacts in the process.

But that seems harder than I thought: "When I google something like that, you only ever come across dating and singles events," the Munich native continues. He is not alone with his problem – at least that's what a look at the answers that gather under the post suggests.

"OMG almost like me," one user reacted. His relationship also "broke up" after 20 years. Since then, he has been reinventing again, looking for ways to go out and dance in the evening. He suggests various clubs for this: Black Opera, Strom Club, Backstage. His conclusion: "Take every day as it comes. [...] I think the main thing is to get out and not sour inside."

Other commentators criticise the suggestion to go to clubs in particular, saying the music there is too loud to even start a conversation. In general, many express their skepticism about making contacts in the nightlife alone as a 40-year-old and especially in Munich. "I wouldn't just pitch up somewhere on my own. Why don't you ask friends or colleagues and go out with them," one suggests. People over 40 have often already found their social circle and are not particularly open to new acquaintances. "Especially in Munich, where many are rather closed to strangers." Another user is of this opinion: "As already mentioned, Munich residents are not exactly good at small talk".

Making new contacts – almost half a million people live in Munich alone

So is there a general problem here? Is it really so difficult in the state capital to change one's social environment on one's own initiative at the age of 40? And is this perhaps due to their inaccessible inhabitants? The questioner doesn't give up yet: "The crux of the matter is that all my friends are already married and are hardly leaving." He therefore wants to expand his circle and not have to spend a long time looking for a location every time. "At least that's my idea..."

Actually, he is by no means the only one in Munich with this need: About 1.5 million people live in the Bavarian metropolis, according to the Munich Statistical Office, a total of 2021,452 of them lived in single households at the end of 585. This corresponds to more than 53 percent of all households at that time. Even if living alone does not necessarily mean being single at the same time – at least the large number of single households suggests that many other Munich residents should also feel the need to leave their own four walls in the evening.

In addition, many new people move to Munich every year who should also have an interest in making new contacts: In 2022, there were a total of 133,060 people.

Bars, new hobbies and singles groups – the list of possibilities is long

In addition to many skeptical comments, there are also a lot of constructive suggestions in the Reddit thread: The Irish Pub Kilians, Kennedys, Flex, Substanz, the Abseits in Schwabing, the Giesinger Stehausschank, Alte Utting, the Bar Centrale or the Bistro No. 2 – the list of bars and restaurants where you might be able to talk to strangers in Munich, is long. So maybe all you need is the right environment to meet open-minded state capitals.

Others suggest alternatives to nightlife to meet new people: "Hobbies that automatically start a conversation, such as acrobatics, dance classes, debating clubs, improv theater... Whatever you enjoy," someone writes. Other possibilities, according to comments, are, for example, singles groups on Facebook, the website Munich Singles or Spontacts – not only to find possible partners, but also to do something. The original questioner then tries it in a personal way: A commentator, whose long-term relationship has also ended and who is now looking for new friends, he suggests that she first write in a private chat.
