2023-09-02T12:31:05.329Z

Highlights: The Deutschlandticket is valid nationwide and enables Germany-wide journeys. The validity of the ticket is not necessarily based on geographical boundaries, but on fare boundaries – i.e. train stations. This in turn means that you can also use the 49-euro ticket to travel to some train stations abroad. For only 49 euros, you can travel to the Netherlands and Belgium. The ticket is only valid up to the German border, but in places close to the border, the ticket can even be used abroad. You can use individual connections from Baden-Württemberg to Switzerland.

Actually, the new low-cost ticket is called Deutschlandticket. But passengers can also travel abroad with it. You just have to know where to go – and we'll tell you.

Finally, the successor to the 9-euro ticket, which was so successful last year, has arrived: the Deutschlandticket, also known as the 49-euro ticket. It has been valid since the beginning of May 2023 and thus replaces tickets for regional and local public transport by bus and train. Regarding the scope of application, the Federal Government says: "The Deutschlandticket is valid nationwide and enables Germany-wide journeys in public transport and regional rail transport of all participating transport companies, state tariffs and transport associations as well as in the network-free area." The only exceptions are long-distance journeys and first class journeys.

Germany-wide journeys, but in places close to the border, the advantages of the Deutschlandticket can even be used abroad. Why? The validity of the ticket is not necessarily based on geographical boundaries, but on fare boundaries – i.e. train stations. This in turn means that you can also use the 49-euro ticket to travel to some train stations abroad. These include, for example, stations in:

  • Austria
  • The Netherlands and Belgium
  • Switzerland
  • Poland
  • France
  • Denmark
  • Luxembourg
  • Czechia
