Following the attack, the IDF Spokesperson announced that "during searches carried out by forces in the Argaman Junction area, following a criminal incident that occurred earlier today (apparently due to protection money), Judea and Samaria Border Police Matilan fighters encountered a terrorist who opened fire at them."

Recall that the attack began as a criminal incident and turned into a nationalist-motivated attack. The incident occurred during routine activity by the forces in the area.
