No time to celebrate: The Bad Bayersoien fire brigade has cancelled its 150th anniversary celebration after the severe storm in the village. At the moment, there is damage to be repaired at home.

Bad Bayersoien – Commander Franz Niggl and his team consulted briefly. But the decision was made quickly and by mutual agreement. The Bad Bayersoien Volunteer Fire Brigade will cancel its anniversary on Saturday, 16 September. "We are forced to cancel our 150th anniversary and the vehicle inauguration of our new GW L2," Niggl said in an e-mail on Sunday evening to Mayor Gisela Kieweg and Johann Eitzenberger, district fire officer and chairman of the Bavarian state association, among others.

Firmly unreasonable: "You have work at home"

The decision was obvious. After all, a turbulent week lies behind Bad Bayersoien. Behind the population and the rescue organizations that toujours tried to repair the massive damage in the village after the devastating hailstorm on Saturday, August 26. The local fire brigade made a significant contribution to this. She helped in every nook and cranny. Hour after hour. Well into the night. And above all, the emergency services put their own damage on the back burner.

"It is not reasonable to expect our firefighters to prepare and carry out a party with almost 500 guests," emphasizes Niggl. "They have work at home." Everyone is happy every Friday and Saturday to repair the damage at home. Nobody thinks about celebrating. In what context and when the anniversary will be made up for is still open.

Most of the organizational stuff had already been bagged. But the cancellation does not cause any problems, let alone costs, Niggl emphasizes. Everyone shows understanding for the situation in which the Soiers have fallen so unprepared and through no fault of their own.

The fire brigade stopped its assistance on Sunday evening. That's what it's formally called. Of course, the disciples of St. Florian continue to support the citizens. For example, if sandbags have fallen from the roof, which should weigh down the tarpaulins. But there are hardly any inquiries left. Everyone works on their own or with privately engaged trades. On Monday evening, Niggl announces, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief wants to pick up materials and transport them to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Emergency roofs, for example, which are stored there. Because: "Officially, there are currently none available in the whole of Bavaria," Niggl clarifies. "They're all with us."

The commander is still overwhelmed by everyone's "insane cooperation". He thinks, for example, of his comrades from Partenkirchen. Their commander Michael Sexl quickly organized a work team with almost 20 task forces. While the Soier were on duty in the village, "they set up our fire station," says Niggl. "Echt top." The sunny sides in dark hours.
