"So that it runs in the summer": In a series, our newspaper portrays people who make sure that things run for us in the summer. Today: The bus driver Günther Wolf.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen – His working day usually begins when most people are still in bed: That's when Günther Wolf's alarm clock rings at 4:30 a.m. The Tölzer has been a bus driver for 28 years. Especially in summer, he often drives the X970 bus line, mainly in the early shifts.

Bus driver Günther Wolf's early shifts often start at 5:30 a.m

They start at 5.30 a.m. or 6.30 a.m. in Tölz. Getting up early is not difficult for him. "That's why I finish work early," says the 60-year-old. A good 15 minutes before the start of his shift, Wolf takes a close look at his workplace. Checks that everything is working. He then adjusts the driver's seat appropriately – then off he goes.

The so-called X-Bus runs over 18 stations from Tölzer Bahnhof, via Wolfratshausen, Geretsried to Starnberg. In December 2021, said express bus line was launched. Since then, the vehicle has been running every 20 minutes. "I was there from the very beginning," says the Tölzer proudly. He still remembers clearly: At the beginning, the buses were rather empty, people had to get used to the new connection. Today, almost every round is well occupied.

Many commuters and students, but also holidaymakers or hikers travel by bus

Wolf's passengers are a colourful mix: In the morning, he chauffeurs many commuters and schoolchildren, and at the moment there are also one or two hikers or holidaymakers. "On the track, I pass beautiful spots." One stop, for example, is directly at the seaside resort in Starnberg. The next one just opposite the steamer jetty.

The Tölzer knows and loves his Upper Bavarian homeland. That's why he knows off the top of his head which sights can be reached with "his" bus line: for example, the rafting town of Wolfratshausen, the memorial cross in Lake Starnberg, where King Ludwig II once died, and actor Heinz Rühmann's final resting place in the Aufkirchen cemetery. "And when I drive from Geretsried to Tölz, I can see the entire Alpine chain, all the way into the Allgäu Alps," Wolf enthuses. "I work where others go on holiday."

Originally, he earned his living as a professional driver. However, for health reasons, he would have to retrain. Wolf has been a trained bus driver since the mid-1990s. His employer is the bus company Geldhauser from Hofolding. In addition to regular services, this also offers long-distance travel.

Wolf gets around a lot - even to other countries

Wolf loves the variety that his job offers him. From March to November, he travels a lot. So he got to know many countries, cities and mentalities. "That's just great." He has been behind the wheel on trips to Italy, Scotland and France. Another time, the bus driver drove up to the North Cape in Norway. But the Tölzer also enjoys driving well-known routes at home in the X-Bus.

"You don't get bored. Every now and then something exciting happens," says Wolf with a wink. For example, in the summer of 2022, when a violent storm swept the maypole in Dorfen into the middle of the street. The trunk completely blocked the passage. "Nothing worked for a while." Almost all X-buses were in one place. "It was a spontaneous bus driver meeting in the middle of Dorfen."

Incidentally, Wolf will soon be making another change: In a few days, he will be going to Prague for four days. "But after every trip, I'm happy when I'm back in Tölz."
