Special Envoy to Amerzagane (Morocco)
The douar of Amerzagane, in the heart of the High Atlas, is nothing more than a mountain of rubble. Apart from the mosque with pastel pink facades, which still stands as if to mourn the sunken village, only three buildings escaped destruction. Located in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter of the earthquake which, according to a still provisional assessment, caused more than 2900 deaths, this hamlet of 24 families was hit hard.
«
Twenty residents lost their lives. We have nowhere to go," laments Hussein Aït Boubker, who, like many survivors, is camping away from the ruins. After being cut off from the world for 48 hours, Amerzagane can now be supplied by emergency services. Further south, the road remains impassable. About twenty douars remain inaccessible other than on foot.
"We wonder what will become of us..."
Unable to go further, rescuers and other humanitarian organizations dumped their stocks of food, mattresses and blankets in Amerzagane...
