A major fire broke out in a wild dump in Nemours (Seine-et-Marne) on Monday, September 11 at the end of the day. It was still in progress this Tuesday in the early afternoon, says the Figaro the departmental rescue and fire service (SDIS77). If the fire "no longer burns as spectacularly" as the day before on Tuesday, it "could last several days," warn firefighters.

More than 4500 square meters burned, on a plot of 8500 square meters. Forty machines, "specialized in industrial fires", and 70 firefighters were still engaged on the scene on Tuesday.

Smoke toxicity worries

According to photos shared by the town hall of Nemours on Facebook, it is a pile of rubbish that has ignited. It is located in a wild dump - visible on satellite images - of a 'sedentary travellers' camp between the Moret road, the A6 motorway and the Loing river.

Once again, the municipality is facing fires producing significant and invasive smoke, "annoys the town hall of Nemours on Facebook. "Travellers who live in the camp burn their waste despite the risk it represents," says the mayor, Valérie Lacroute, in Le Parisien. On social networks, the city recalls having "challenged the State" several times "on this unacceptable situation".

If firefighters are mobilized on the fire, residents are concerned about the possible toxicity of the smoke that emerges, given the nature of the fire. "We carry out surveys that are transmitted to the authorities," says the SDIS. It is up to them to take the necessary decisions. On Facebook, the town hall of Nemours relays the instructions of the ARS, which, for the moment, only recommends to "keep doors and windows closed", "limit travel and time spent outside" and "avoid physical activities outdoors". And this within a radius of 10 kilometers around the town.
