(see related) (ANSA) - ROME, SEP 12 - Lampedusa cannot withstand the "shockwave" caused by the arrival of record numbers of migrants andboats, Mayor Filippo Mannino said on Tuesday.
"In the last 24 hours our small island has been hit by a wave oflandings involving all its coasts and beaches, with thousands ofmigrants seeking shelter on a territory that is unable towithstand such a shockwave, the size of which exceeds innumerical terms the resident population itself," said the mayoron the sidelines of a meeting requested by citizens,entrepreneurs, and associations to address the phenomenon.
In this context, Mannino said "it is impossible to guaranteeadequate assistance to migrants, despite huge logistical effortswhich, when all is said and done, are insufficient". (ANSA).
