2023-09-12T21:13:26.744Z

Highlights: Sahra Wagenknecht, a member of the Bundestag for the Left Party, wants to separate from her party. The fronts between the party leadership and WagenKnecht had become increasingly hardened in recent months. The AfD in particular could lose feathers in the event of a new party being founded. A new party of Sahra Wagenknecht could cause a stir. This is suggested by polls that see shifts, especially on the political left and right.

Berlin - Whether she founds a new party or not - it is still open. Sahra Wagenknecht, a member of the Bundestag for the Left Party, a controversial figure in her own ranks, wants to separate from her party, according to several media reports. The fronts between the party leadership and Wagenknecht had become increasingly hardened in recent months. The wife of left-wing leader Oskar Lafontaine had repeatedly spoken out in public with extremely controversial theses during the Corona pandemic and around the Ukraine war.

Now, the latest survey claims to have yielded exciting figures: As the Bild newspaper reports, according to the pollsters, the AfD in particular could lose feathers in the event of a new party being founded by Wagenknecht. Instead of 21.5 percent, the AfD would receive only 16 percent nationwide.

Wagenknecht's own party: AfD fears for many votes

The chairman of the AfD, Alice Weidel, also warned in the ARD summer interview that a newly founded party of Wagenknecht would divide the "government-critical camp" and even keep the AfD away from participating in government. Weidel added: Wagenknecht would become "a willing vicarious agent for the traffic light" with his own party.

The head of the opinion research institute INSA, Hermann Binkert, told Bild: "A Wagenknecht party has a potential of up to 25 percent" and would "directly weaken the AfD and the Left Party in particular, which could lose up to half of their current voters." Translated into current polls, this meant that the AfD could plummet from 22 to 11 percent.

Wagenknecht party: SPD, Union and FDP would also lose voters

According to INSA data, the SPD, Union and FDP would also lose voters, albeit to a lesser extent. According to Brinkert, the parties would have to reckon with losses of one to three percent. In terms of federal politics, a re-establishment of Wagenknecht would also be dangerous for the Left. "At the moment, it looks like the start of a Wagenknecht party would be the end of the left," Binkert said. For such a party, however, the following applies in any case, according to Binkert: "It will revive political competition."

Contrary to the Wagenknecht horror scenario, the AfD reported a new record on Tuesday: According to its own figures, the party currently has 34,000 members nationwide, around 5500 more than a year ago. This was announced by a spokesman in Berlin. Since September 11, 2022, almost 2400 members have left the party, compared to 7800 new entrants. However, this is still a fairly small number. The SPD and CDU have more than 350,000 members, while the Left Party said it still had a good 2022,54 at the end of 000.

"The weakness of our political opponents is our strength," party leaders Tino Chrupalla and Weidel were quoted as saying in a statement. The reasons for the increase in membership and in the surveys are manifold. Weidel and Chrupalla listed, among other things, the AfD's rejection of the traffic light building energy law and their advocacy of nuclear power and Russian gas to reduce energy prices. (fmü/dpa)
