The Lod District Court on Tuesday acquitted Vladislav Popov of charges of murdering his parents, Olesia and Sergei, in their apartment in Netanya, due to insanity. Thus, the court accepted the position of the State Prosecutor's Office and the Public Defender's Office. Popov will be sent to a psychiatrist for 25 years.
The recommendation of the State Prosecutor's Office and the Public Defender's Office, which was accepted by the court, was based on a psychiatric opinion that determined that Popov was not responsible for his actions at the time he committed the murder and was therefore unfit to stand trial.
Popov allegedly stabbed his parents multiple times, turned on the gas tap and fled the apartment. For his part, he claimed self-defense.
Attorney Avi Cohen, who represented Vladislav Popov on behalf of the public defender's office, said: "This is a tragic and difficult case, which could have been prevented, because the defendant asked to be hospitalized two or three weeks before the incident, but the psychiatrist determined that he was not dangerous and refused to hospitalize him. I welcome that the District Attorney accepted our position and agreed to acquit the defendant due to his illness at the time of the incident. I hope the defendant receives the medication at the hospital and his mental state improves."
