The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday the launch of a "special military operation" in the Nagorno-Karabakh region in the west of the country. According to initial reports, sounds of fighting and sirens were heard throughout the predominantly Armenian region.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev gave a brief statement that the objectives of the operation were the "demilitarization" of the Armenian enclave on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and the replacement of power with Armenian autonomy.
Earlier, it was reported that two civilians and four Azeri policemen were killed in two separate incidents by landmines in the disputed region. According to the claims of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, Armenian "terrorists" laid the mines on traffic arteries throughout the region.
