Highlights: The Traffic Index examines and ranks cities around the world according to their travel time, fuel costs and CO2 emissions. Traffic jams and slow travel mean increased fuel consumption and soaring prices. The other result of traffic jams is, of course, CO<> emissions – which also soar. The 2022 TomTom Traffic Index covers 389 cities in 56 countries, spread across 6 continents. Data comes from more than 600 million connected devices – from car navigation systems to smartphones. In total, data was collected for the index from 58 billion driving hours.

London holds the record for the slowest speed in the city centre, the traffic index of TomTom, a Dutch company that deals with location technology and consumer electronics, said on Friday. The index examines and ranks cities around the world based on their travel time, fuel costs and CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions.

The cities with the slowest traffic (average travel time per 10km):

🇬🇧 London: 36 min 20 s
🇮🇳 Bengaluru: 29 min 10 s
🇮🇪 Dublin: 28 min 30 s
🇯🇵 Sapporo: 27 min 40 s
🇮🇹 Milan: 27 min 30 s
🇮🇳 Pune: 27 min 20 s
🇷🇴 Bucharest: 27 min 20 s

According to the index, in 2022 it took just over 36 minutes to travel just 10km across London, with the average speed in the city being around 25km/h, but dropping to just 14km/h during rush hour.

Next in line at the slowest level after the British capital are Bangalore (India) and Dublin (Ireland). Traffic jams inevitably mean increased fuel consumption. As fuel prices rise, this translates into a global average cost rise of 27% for petrol cars and 44% for diesel cars.

TomTom calculated that the average cost per 10,000 kilometers traveled in Hong Kong was 1,986 euros for a petrol vehicle (up 14% annually) and 1,511 euros for diesel (up 22%). The other result of the traffic jams is, of course, CO2 emissions, which also soar.
