Although he was the only child of Holocaust survivors, Yitzhak insisted on serving on the first line of defense, enlisted in the Paratroopers Brigade and was an exemplary fighter.
He was already wounded when his unit was ambushed by Egypt, on its way to the first front line, on the sixth day of the war. "Paid, jump ahead," his commander called to him. And the wounded Isaac heard the call and jumped into the fire. He was killed while rescuing wounded from a damaged armored personnel carrier, and he was nineteen minus exactly five days old. Then he also said the same last words about his father and mother who were left alone.
This year, Mali Meshulam, Yitzhak's mother, turned ninety-eight years old. This is what the bereaved mother said this week
about the half century that has passed since her only son fell: "There is none, there is none, there is no consolation. And each day that passes, it's harder. And I feel a bigger disaster. The longing only grows stronger and stronger."
