The restoration of the southern portal of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donato, the oldest and most symbolic of the Cathedral of Arezzo, is underway. The portal, it is explained in a note, unfortunately, due to the ephemeral material (sandstone), the age and atmospheric agents, is irreparably crumbling. The intervention, which will try to stop the process of degradation and to enhance what is still preserved, was made possible thanks to the sensitivity of the National Association of Social and Recreational Communities (Ancos) Aps in collaboration with Confartigianato Imprese Arezzo. The work, authorized and followed under the high surveillance of the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Siena, Grosseto and Arezzo, is carried out by qualified restorers for stone and frescoes, they are Sandro Ceccolini, Matteo Nardella and Luca Russi. On this occasion the ancient wooden door was also restored by the company Antica Maniera di Marco Santi, thanks to the contribution of Graziella Braccialini. "We are very pleased for this intervention that allows us to enhance the cathedral of Arezzo - says Bishop Andrea Migliavacca -.
The cathedral is the heart of the life of the diocese, the place where there is the bishop's chair and then this which is a bit the house of the bishop and of the whole community and which is a great artistic asset for our city, requires care, attention, custody. For my part, I thank all the donors for this necessary and important work".
