High school students as election workers

2023-10-03T16:41:15.330Z

Highlights: High school students as election workers. Around 15 first-time voters can now look forward to an assignment in Planegg on 8 October. The municipality had specifically written to the local Kurt-Huber-Gymnasium and recruited helpers there. "We're lucky that there are a lot of young people there," says Sandra Zwillich from the municipality of Gräfelfing. "It's more than I thought it would be," says Marion Wedershoven, election commissioner for Planegg.

The elections of the state and district parliaments are already underway. And who counts is also certain: This year, a particularly large number of first-time voters have registered as election workers in the Würmtal municipalities.

Würmtal – That doesn't happen often: The first Würmtal residents have already voted. Even before the election notification was in their mailbox in mid-September, they had participated in the state and district elections by mail. "Normally, only the notification goes out," explains Sandra Zwillich, election officer of the municipality of Gräfelfing. But this time it came late. In the town halls in the Würmtal, all the documents necessary for the election were already available. As soon as the electoral roll was drawn up on 27 August, ballot papers were allowed to be issued. And this opportunity was actively used in the Würm Valley.

In Krailling, 25 absentee ballots were issued and sent before the election notification went out, in Gräfelfing over 100 and in Neuried there were around 200. On 15 September, the Neurieders finally found their election notification in the mailbox. "Since then, we have been completely overwhelmed," says Inke Franzen, who is responsible for the election in Neuried. By the evening of the following Monday, Franzen had processed around 1350 absentee ballot applications.

Age of majority Requirement

"It's flooding right now," says Sandra Sona from Krailling. "People have been waiting for it." Shortly after the election notification was sent, there were piles of applications in the town hall, she says. She had sent around 1300 by 19 September. In Planegg and Gräfelfing there were around 1650 each.

Conclusions about how popular postal voting will be in this vote as a whole cannot be drawn from the figures. In most cases, the rush subsides after a short time in order to pick up speed again a week before the election, explain the election commissioners of the Würmtal municipalities.

But one thing is clear: the election is in full swing. All preparations for Sunday, October 8, have also been made. All municipalities in the Würm Valley have sufficient election workers. "It was a bit sluggish, but we made it," says Sandra Zwillich from the municipality of Gräfelfing. "We're lucky that there are a lot of young people there," she says.

This is not a coincidence. The municipality had specifically written to the local Kurt-Huber-Gymnasium and recruited helpers there. "That worked really well," says Zwillich. "Some have only just gained the right to vote." This is a prerequisite for being allowed to help.

Additional income

The managing director of the municipality of Planegg, Stefan Schaudig, says: "My son did the same when he was 18 years old because he was interested in it." It is a good extra income.

My Area

Marion Wedershoven, the election commissioner for Planegg, reports that her community has turned to the local Feodor-Lynen-Gymnasium for the first time. The result of this promotion is also impressive. "It's more than I thought it would be," she says. Around 15 first-time voters can now look forward to an assignment in Planegg on 8 October. "Some are still on the waiting list." However, since the Oktoberfest time just came to an end yesterday, Tuesday, one must assume that potential helpers are still falling ill. This would give the substitutes a good chance of being used. Wedershoven sees much more potential at the school. This time, the FLG was approached late. "It's certainly a good idea to do it earlier in the upcoming election."

But it's not just schoolchildren who are interested in politics. In Gauting, firefighters and employees of the building authority reported. The municipality of Neuried published an appeal in the local "Ratschpost". And even after that, Franzen noted: "More and more younger people are getting in touch." She hopes that they will remain with her as helpers in the future. This hope does not seem unjustified. In any case, Stefan Schaudig's son will be back this year.
