Some things are new, but the past is missing. This was not a deliberate trick, but due to reality. New organizer Stefan Korfesmeyer made everything a size smaller at his premiere. Nevertheless, several thousand visitors enthusiastically accepted the new Murnau Art Night, which has been called the "Blue Night of Art" since this year.
Murnau – How much Murnau missed this art night could be seen in the inconspicuous scenes of this magical evening. The six-year-old boy who, after ages, wanted to go back to the hairdresser on that very day and had his hair cut by Christina Neuschl, the one with the colorful hair braid. The stray young people for whom the Art Night has always been a first step in Murnau's nightlife. The little girls who danced with light artist Luna Olivia Fee. The crowds that clogged the pedestrian zone because they just did what everyone wants to do, which is to soak up all these stimuli. The lights, the sky, the scents, the scraps of music – techno here, trumpet there and chatter everywhere. Murnau has its art night again. Or as a young guest put it shortly after 0 o'clock: "Something is stirring again. Murnau is alive again."
Everything was supposed to be a size smaller - it was no worse
The eve of the holiday is now called "Blue Night of Art". As noble as the motives for the name change (in memoriam to the dead founder Rupert Reggel), the people of Murnau still call their art night Art Night. But truly, their shape has changed. It started with very elementary things. The open-air stage is now located in the middle of the market. That condensed the event. One searched in vain for the large illuminations that used to characterize the facades on this night. But although many things were not there, they were not missing. This was certainly not a deliberate trick, but simply due to reality: Organizer Stefan Korfesmeyer had emphasized well in advance that he wanted to make everything a size smaller.
The good old art night has been given a youthful touch
But smaller doesn't mean more boring. On the contrary. Korfesmeyer's Kunstnacht has been given a youthful touch. A rave – i.e. electric music in a special location with ecstatic dance – at Pantlbräu? A crazy good idea. At what felt like 70 degrees, you really thought you were in a basement compartment in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. A DJ at Café Herzstück? The right gateway drug at the entrance to the pedestrian zone. Headphone and after-party in the club in the late evening? Exactly what the boys under 30 needed as a lure. "Cool set up. Young and old were there," says Diwata Martini, 20 years old.
All the rest was there anyway. The one-man ensembles on 30 square meters. The jazz musicians at the butcher's. Popular music on stage. Paul Adams and his band entertained the crowd – and brought many a surprise guest such as alt-rock'n'roller Racky Demharter on stage.
Organizer is overwhelmed by the response
"I'm grateful for everyone who participated," says organizer Stefan Korfesmeyer. He had opened in the afternoon with a creative speech. To the sounds of Hans Zimmer, he delivered his message. "The goal is to establish Murnau as the art venue in Bavaria. The Kunstnacht is a step in this direction," explains the Korfi, as everyone calls him, in an interview with the Tagblatt. Shortly after 21 p.m., he was met at the Marian column, and at first he could think of nothing else but to say: "I am overwhelmed." He had expected 1000 people. What was going on in the market trumped this number many times over. No one can say exactly how many people there were, because it just can't be counted in the general hustle and bustle. 3000? 4000? 5000? "From an economic point of view, we are in the black and we have reached our goal of 1000 ticket sales. I can only speculate about the exact number of visitors, as the pedestrian zone was freely accessible, but I assume that they are impressive," explains Korfesmeyer the day after.

You only have to ask the gastronomy what was going on with them. Their representatives are always a good indicator. From the palace garden it says: "We have never experienced an evening like this before." At the Da Noi restaurant, they sold so much pizza and pasta that the kitchen had to close earlier than usual. There was just nothing left. "The Kunstnacht is awesome for Murnau," says boss Marco Pollini.
Perfect conditions for the rebirth of the Art Night
Everything came together for the perfect rebirth: people's longing, exceptionally warm weather, a program across all ages. Of course, there were one or two flaws. A little bit of art apart from music. Too few food and drink stalls. Too little structure in the organization. And where was the blue color, the blue light for the "Blue Night of Art"? All the same. For Korfesmeyer, the start was also there to establish a new status quo. He will be able to shimmy along this in the next few years. The most important message got through to everyone anyway: Murnau's Art Night is back.
