The offense is as sudden as it is violent. On Saturday morning, several thousand rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip by the military wing of Hamas - the Islamist organization that controls the area - in the direction of Israel. Hamas says 5,000 rockets have been fired, Israel about 2,200. In addition to these missiles, armed Hamas soldiers entered Israeli villages on the Gaza border, attacking civilians. Hundreds of residents living in the northeastern Gaza Strip have fled their homes to seek safety.
