Israeli army strikes southern Lebanon
Israeli artillery struck southern Lebanon in response to fire from the area, the IDF said in a statement shortly before 07:30 a.m. "Israeli artillery is in the process of striking the area of Lebanon from which a fire was fired," the text said, without elaborating on the nature of the attack. Hamas and other Palestinian movements engaged in the armed struggle against Israel are established in southern Lebanon.

China 'deeply concerned' about 'escalation'
China said it was "deeply concerned" by the clashes that have already left hundreds dead between Israel and Palestinians and urged all parties to exercise "restraint." "The repeated clashes between Palestine and Israel fully demonstrate that the long-term stagnation of the peace process is not sustainable," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

Towards U.S. military aid?
The U.S. and Israel had an "in-depth discussion" about Israel's military aid needs in the face of Hamas' offensive, a senior White House official said. He said an announcement on the U.S. side was possible as early as Sunday, but acknowledged that the executive branch was facing a complicated parliamentary situation, since one of the houses of Congress is paralyzed after the impeachment of its Republican leader. "There's probably a role for Congress to play here, and without a Speaker of the House of Representatives, it's an unprecedented situation that we're going to have to deal with."
