Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nephew of the late President Kennedy, announced his run for president as an independent candidate on Monday.

Kennedy, a scion of the liberal Kennedy family, decided not to run in the Democratic Party, which he had been a part of for many years and in which his family had gained considerable influence. During a political event in Philadelphia titled "Declare Your Independence," Kennedy said he was running to "create a new declaration of independence for the American nation" while also attacking Wall Street, American pharma companies and media companies.

A young student at the conference told The Associated Press that Kennedy Jr. "doesn't sound like a politician," and another participant said he came to support because he wanted to find another candidate who could get both sides to work together.

In recent years, Kennedy, an environmental lawyer, has spoken out against COVID-19 vaccines and supported the spread of conspiracy theories, which has helped him gain popularity among conservative right-wing audiences. Lately, he has been giving numerous interviews to Fox News and podcasts that support conspiracy theories and claiming that the Democratic Party has abandoned its principles and been corrupted. Kennedy also remembers anti-Semitic statements that "Ashkenazi and Chinese Jews are immune" to the coronavirus.
