LE FIGARO: What is your reaction to the attack in Arras and the murder of a teacher?
Henri LEROY: How long are we going to put up with the horror? How long are we going to remain unmoved in the face of barbarism? This is yet another terrorist attack in which a teacher was stabbed to death by an individual who shouted "Allahu Akbar". And this tragedy reminds us of the assassination of Samuel Paty by an Islamist extremist. When we heard the former Minister of National Education, Pap Ndiaye, in the Senate, he brushed aside the issue of Islamism. Samuel Paty, a servant of the state, was a victim of this movement. This is unacceptable. As for the attack in Arras, we realize that the murderer's family should have been expelled. An eviction prevented by the State and the mobilization of associations. Their responsibility is engaged today.

Is your senatorial mission going to take up this drama?
We will, of course, address the issue at the upcoming hearing of the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, and at that of Mickaëlle Paty, Samuel's sister, on 17 October. More generally, we want to shed light on all threats and attacks against teachers as part of our monitoring mission, which has the powers of a commission of inquiry.
What steps should be taken?
One thing is clear: nothing has been done to protect our teachers from barbarism. The Arras terrorist should have been deported, but he was not. This is intolerable. All deportations of dangerous individuals must be carried out. We must ensure that the obligations to leave French territory are applied and that foreigners registered for radicalisation are deported. The state of the terrorist threat demands it.
