The late summer weather in Germany comes to an abrupt end. At the weekend, we can expect cool temperatures, rain showers and wind.

Munich – The late summer weather in Germany will come to an abrupt end this weekend. Although there is still a hint of summer on Friday, it suddenly becomes uncomfortable in the night to Saturday. Cool temperatures, rain showers and isolated thunderstorms are to be expected over Germany according to weather forecasts. Experts urge caution due to possible icy roads. In Lower Saxony and Bremen, the first snowfall of the year could even occur next week.

Last Friday, new maximum temperatures for the month of October were recorded in some parts of Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) predicted temperatures between 16 and 22 degrees for the northern part of the country, while values between 23 and 28 degrees were expected in the other regions. In the foothills of the Alps in Bavaria, the DWD even assumed temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celsius.

Weather change in Germany: Massive drop in temperature at the weekend

A cold front is expected to bring a significant drop in temperature from the northwest on Saturday night. According to the DWD, the maximum temperatures drop drastically. In southeastern Germany and parts of Schleswig-Holstein, temperatures could drop to as low as 8 degrees. In the rest of Germany, temperatures between 10 and 19 degrees are forecast. In addition, "showery, partly thundery rain" is to be expected in central and southwestern Germany during the night to Saturday. Isolated rain showers may also occur in the southeast as well as on the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts in the course of Saturday.

Especially in the northern area and in the eastern half we can expect windy to stormy weather on Saturday. According to the DWD report, maximum temperatures vary between 14 degrees in the northwest and 21 degrees in the south. In the night to Sunday, temperatures will drop again, with between 2 and 9 degrees forecast. We should also be prepared for cooler temperatures during the day on Sunday, according to DWD meteorologist Florian Bilgeri. "The rest of the weekend will be slightly changeable, with isolated showers, maybe thunderstorms. In the northeast and at the sea, it will also remain windy."

The temperatures at the weekend at a glance:

  • Friday: 16 to 22 degrees Celsius in the north, 23 to 28 degrees Celsius in the rest of Germany
  • Saturday: in the night to Saturday values between 10 and 19 degrees Celsius, during the day from 14 degrees Celsius in the northwest to 21 degrees in the south
  • Sunday: Temperatures between 9 and 15 degrees Celsius expected

Golden autumn in Germany seems to be coming to an end – even black ice is possible

The abrupt change in weather at the weekend should not be taken lightly. Even at temperatures below four degrees Celsius, dangerous slippery conditions can occur on specific road sections. Even on tracks that normally offer good grip, the accident experts at Dekra warn. Risky areas can occur especially on routes with the following sections: cool forest areas, areas on shady north-facing slopes, windy plateaus or depressions where cold air can accumulate.
