170 million euros in property damage is likely to have been caused by the hailstorm at the end of August. At the meeting in Benediktbeuern, the Insurance Chamber speaks of the third largest event in the Group's history.

Benediktbeuern – Seven weeks have passed since the devastating hailstorm that caused massive damage in the Tölzer Land. Many buildings, gardens and cars are badly damaged or even destroyed (we reported). Just a few hours after the storm, clean-up and restoration work began. This is also a mammoth task for insurance companies. In a press conference on Friday in Benediktbeuern, Christian Krams, Member of the Board of Management of the Versicherungskammer Group, together with Mayor Anton Ortlieb, gave an initial overview of the extent of the damage.

Could still develop into the second largest loss case

According to Krams, the storm "Denis" is the third largest event in the Group's history after the "Munich hail" of 1984 and the Whitsun storm of 2019. "It could still become the second largest." Currently, many expert appointments are still pending. "We have projections, but no final figures yet," explains Krams.

By the way: Everything from the region is also available in our regular Bad Tölz newsletter.

The municipality of Benediktbeuern is also insured with the Bavarian Insurance Chamber with its real estate. Municipal buildings were also hit. "We estimate that the amount of damage amounts to a mid-single-digit million amount," says Ortlieb when asked. "It is a challenge to carry out the work on all properties in parallel and to get safely into the winter," emphasizes the head of the town hall.

In Benediktbeuern, even more buildings are affected than originally thought

It is also now certain that the initial estimate that 80 percent of the buildings in Benediktbeuern were affected was not correct. "This figure needs to be corrected to 100 percent." Throughout the village, more than 1000 main buildings and just as many outbuildings were damaged. "And then there's the monastery."

"The storm was anything but an ordinary event for us either," emphasizes Krams. One day after the storm, on 27 August, he had seen for himself on site. "And we have our teams of assessors stationed here." This was necessary due to the great damage and "the high emotional impact of the customers". "Depending on the size and extent of the damage, the expert appointments were prioritized."

At least 20 million euros in damage to buildings and vehicles in Benediktbeuern

So far, a little more than half of the buildings in the region have been inspected – a total of about 4300,170. It has also made it easier to process claims. "Anyone who got a craftsman was able to hire him immediately. We didn't check any more estimates. That's simply no longer possible in this quantity," says Krams. "We are currently calculating expenses of up to 20 million euros for the damage," Krams continues. At least 17 million euros of damage was caused to buildings and vehicles in Benediktbeuern. So far, the Insurance Chamber has received about 000,80 reports as a result of the storm. 20 percent of this is damage to buildings, <> percent in the automotive sector. "Reports are still coming in."

About 20 percent of homeowners are not insured against hail

Another special feature: "The damage is extraordinarily extensive." What is frightening for Krams is how many houses (20 percent) are not insured against storms and hail. "There were very difficult moments." After all, a new roof costs between 70,000 and 100,000 euros. Especially with a view to the future. You have to assume that something like this will happen more often." He expects the group to be busy handling the claims until spring.
