An unexpected find in the Bundeskunsthalle: a self-painted painting turns up at an exhibition. Now the unknown artist has been found.

Bonn – While others are bringing stolen art back to the museum, the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn has been enriched by a new work of art. During the dismantling of a closed exhibition in the Bundeskunsthalle, the curators discovered that a strange painting was suddenly hanging on the wall. "Someone has hung a picture – presumably self-painted – in the exhibition," the Bundeskunsthalle wrote on Facebook on Thursday. Suddenly, the Bundeskunsthalle had one more image.

"We think it's funny and want to get to know the artist," the post reads. With the request "So get in touch! There is no hassle. Word of honor," they searched for the unknown artist.

Exhibition curator Johanna Adam told the German Press Agency that she could only speculate as to how the painting ended up in the exhibition. "The picture isn't particularly big, so someone might have hidden it under their sweater." The picture, presumably painted by himself, is only about 20 centimeters tall. In any case, it could have happened only in the last few days, otherwise it would have been noticed earlier. "Because the work was placed in a corner where no other artworks were installed – there were listening stations and wall texts and photos as wall graphics – there was no need for security guards at this point," says Adam. The exhibition, which ended on Sunday, dealt with the topic "Who we are" and dealt with the history of German migration.

The Bundeskunsthalle reacted humorously to the mysterious picture. The Kunsthalle is looking for the unknown artist on Facebook. "To be honest, we think it's pretty funny and we'd love to know more about it. To whom do we owe the picture?" Numerous Facebook users are also enthusiastic about the action and the way the Kunsthalle treats it. "A successful campaign. And that's what art is all about. It gets us talking to each other!" one user commented. "Great action. And great reaction from the Bundeskunsthalle! Maybe the artist will get a special exhibition," writes another user.
