From the strengthening of the protection of synagogues and Jewish schools to the assassination of Dominique Bernard, the repercussions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflictin France were immediate. How do you explain that this issue is so sensitive in France and throughout Europe?
Bernard ROUGIER. - Islamist networks have exploited the rot of the Palestinian issue to give it religious significance. Since the signing of the Oslo Accords in September 1993, they have considered – in the Middle East as well as in Europe – that the peace process was "batil", that is, illegitimate and hostile to God in its essence. I saw this work being done in an Arab, Muslim and Palestinian environment, that of the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, in the early 1990s.
