Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has ordered Palestinian security forces to suppress any demonstrations in Palestinian cities where there are signs of protest against his rule. In a message sent to the commanders of the security forces, it was emphasized that "we must prepare and strike at any protest that includes criticism against us."
Abbas also ordered members of Fatah's Central Committee to desist from expressing support for Hamas and its actions, and demanded that they refrain from showing solidarity with the organization. Palestinian sources told Israel Hayom.
The PA chairman's remarks come against the backdrop of grave concern in Ramallah about the expansion of unrest on the Palestinian street throughout Judea and Samaria against the backdrop of the war in the Gaza Strip. The PA leadership is concerned that Hamas and the terrorist organizations seek to exploit the war to initiate an intifada in the West Bank against Abbas' rule and topple him.
Last night (Tuesday) and last Friday, protest marches were organized in the center of Ramallah, not far from Mahmoud Abbas' office. The demonstrators called for the overthrow of his regime and openly supported Hamas' military-terrorist wing. The protest demonstrations were also joined by ordinary residents who are not affiliated with one organization or another, in solidarity with the demand to replace the current Palestinian leadership.
