The considerations of the Landsberg district office to use the school gym in Rott as refugee accommodation are causing a stir in the Lechrain community. At the municipal council meeting, it was not only the mayor who spoke clearly in front of numerous visitors.

Rott – Only four items were on the agenda of the last meeting of the Rott municipal council. One of them, however, caused enormous excitement in the Lechrain community and an unprecedented rush to the council meeting in the parish hall. "The Information on the Accommodation of Asylum Seekers in the School Gym" mobilized around 150 Rotters, some of whom were only standing room and who even had to wait in the foyer.

"That's an extraordinarily high number of visitors," said Mayor Fritz Schneider in his welcome address. "The district office has named five places, including Rott, which are being looked at more closely because of the small number of refugees accommodated," Schneider added.

A decision has not yet been made

The municipality of Rott has so far offered the district office a building in which six to eight refugees can be accommodated. In addition, there is an offer from the private sector for a larger building, which is still under review. In order to accommodate the steadily increasing number of asylum seekers – the district expects about 150 in October – the immigration office in the district office is desperately looking for suitable places. "Our agency has looked at various gyms, including Rotter. However, a decision has not yet been made," explained Stephan Mies, the head of the immigration office, who had come to the municipal council meeting to answer questions.

"We don't enjoy these considerations," Mies admitted amid occasional heckling from the audience. He hopes that enough alternatives will be found in time to prevent the use of gymnasiums, such as the municipality-owned Rotter school gym. These included commercial halls and modular buildings, for which, however, suitable land is required. In the enquiries of the local councillors, the tent accommodation and the time factor were also discussed.

"We're not going to call today that a bus with refugees is coming tomorrow," says Mies, adding that if the worst comes to the worst, there is a certain lead time before the refugees actually arrive in the community.

Mayor. "I'm not willing to give up the hall"

There was applause for municipal councillor Markus Rieder, who clearly spoke out against a conversion of the hall. Schneider also made his rejection clear. "I'm not willing to give up the hall," said the mayor, who wants to intensify his efforts to find alternatives. "You can't just refuse," explained Schneider, who then also allowed some visitors to have their say. Primary school principal Julia Thauer cited security concerns that speak against accommodating refugees in the immediate vicinity of the school.

The principals Eva Klein and Markus Arnold from the middle school also argued in the same direction, whereby they also addressed the environment. "Where are the refugees supposed to be during the day – in the playground?" asked Klein.

A visitor who comes from the event construction industry brought up the construction of a container solution. "It may not be the luxury option, but I'll build it for you in two weeks." In the end, the mayor closed the approximately one-and-a-half-hour agenda item without a decision, but with an urgent appeal to all those present to look for solutions to avoid a confiscation of the gym. "Mr. Mies will certainly take a few thoughts with him from tonight," Schneider summed up.
