A week after a pro-Palestinian demonstration on the Place Masséna in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), a new rally was announced this Saturday, this time a stone's throw away, on the Place Garibaldi. A little less than 300 people had responded to the call of the first group despite the ban of the Maralpine prefecture. Even if the number of activists present remained low, this demonstration had caused controversy since some activists had insulted the mayor of the Côte d'Azur capital, Christian Estrosi.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators had called the mayor a "murderer" in relation to his professed pro-Israel stance. The elected official filed a complaint for "public insults" and "defamation", as did the new representative of the State, Hugues Moutouh. Two organizers had been arrested and they too decided to file a complaint against the mayor, they reported in Nice-Matin.
Photos of children held hostage by Hamas released by the city of Nice
As he had promised during his first meeting with the press on 11 October, the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes has decided to ban this demonstration again. The "collective for a just and lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis", which brings together unions including the CGT, political parties including La France insoumise and associations, including Attac, will therefore be rejected its request filed Tuesday. But these activists do not intend to give up and have announced that they will challenge the ban in court.
Still in its effort to show its support for Israel - after hanging the flag from the windows of the City Hall and projecting it on the Bellanda Tower, visible from the Promenade des Anglais - the City of Nice now broadcasts photos of the children hostages of Hamas on its various electronic billboards. And on Thursday, an action to raise awareness about the situation of these detained children is to be held in the Côte d'Azur capital as in other major cities in France.
