Inclusive Writing
Surveys show that the French are divided – or rather "divided" – on a subject that is now academic, and which only yesterday seemed ridiculous. To declare oneself reluctant to inclusive writing, if only for fear of the unmistakable illegibility of the midpoint and the reading difficulties it entails, would be, we are told, to reject in one fell swoop any egalitarian societal dynamic. Language becomes an ideological battleground. For activists of inclusive writing, it is in itself a source of discrimination.
