Highlights: Israel-Hamas war: nearly 29,000 displaced in Lebanon. Since 7 October, there has been an almost daily exchange of fire between Lebanon's Hezbollah, a Hamas ally, and the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip. At least 58 people have been killed in the violence on the Lebanese side, most of them Hezbollah fighters but also at least four civilians, including Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah. On Friday, Hezbollah claimed to have fired rockets at several Israeli positions. The likelihood of Hezbollah becoming more involved in the conflict would depend on a possible Israeli ground operation in Gaza, analysts say.

The war between Israel and Hamas affects the Lebanese. Nearly 29,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon since violence began on the border with Israel, according to new figures released Friday by a UN agency.

Since the escalation between Israel and Hamas triggered by the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian movement on Israeli soil on 7 October, there has been an almost daily exchange of fire between Lebanon's Hezbollah, a Hamas ally, and the Israeli army in the border area.

In a report, the International Organization for Migration said the escalation on the Israeli-Lebanese border has displaced 28,965 people, mostly in southern Lebanon, which borders Israel. IOM highlighted a 37 per cent increase in the number of displaced people, compared to its last report on Tuesday (21,000 displaced).

Many of them have joined relatives or rented apartments in more remote areas in the north and centre of the country. Others have taken refuge in shelters in the coastal city of Tyre and in the southeastern region of Hasbaya. In Israel, dozens of communities have been ordered to evacuate.

58 dead in Lebanon, 4 including one civilian in Israel

At least 58 people have been killed in the violence on the Lebanese side, according to an AFP tally, most of them Hezbollah fighters but also at least four civilians, including Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah. The Israeli military reported four deaths, including a civilian.

On Friday, Hezbollah claimed to have fired rockets at several Israeli positions. The Israeli army said on X (formerly Twitter) that "several shots fired from Lebanon towards Israel fell in Syria," a country bordering Lebanon and Israel.

While the fighting so far remains relatively contained, the likelihood of Hezbollah becoming more involved in the conflict would depend on a possible Israeli ground operation in Gaza, analysts say.

The Hamas attack killed at least 1,400 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to Israeli officials, and Israeli retaliatory strikes in Gaza killed more than 7,300 people, including more than 3,000 children, according to Hamas' Health Ministry.
