This is unprecedented since Taiwan's first presidential elections in 1996: rather than the traditional duel between the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), focused on Taiwanese independence, and the Kuomintang (KMT), in favor of more peaceful relations with Beijing, four candidates are announced for the presidential elections that will take place in early 2024. One is none other than electronics mogul Terry Gou, founder of Foxconn. He announced his candidacy on August 28, much to the chagrin of his party, the KMT, which nominated politician Hou Yu-ih in May.

Terry Gou's candidacy is only half a surprise, as the billionaire's political ambitions date back to the last presidential elections. At the time, Mr. Gou, already a member of the KMT, claimed that the goddess Mazu (a deity much worshipped in Taiwan) appeared to him in a dream, imploring him to bring peace and stability to the Taiwan Strait.
