The defacement of the grave of a former LFI activist, whose house had already been set on fire last summer, sparked outrage among the Insoumise on Friday, with Jean-Luc Mélenchon denouncing a "primary anti-LFIsm". The public prosecutor of Epinal, Frédéric Nahon, confirmed to AFP "the acts of damage committed on the grave" of Elisabeth Becker, a former LFI activist who died last January at the age of 76 and is buried in the cemetery of Rochesson, a commune southeast of Epinal.
According to the Vosges Matin daily, the grave was smeared with pink paint and a commemorative plaque was stolen. The facts are "a priori recent", said Frédéric Nahon. An investigation is "underway" and there is no apprehended perpetrator or "claim" for the time being, the magistrate added. At the end of July, Elisabeth Becker's house was set on fire in the middle of the night while her husband was inside. A judicial investigation for attempted murder was then opened, "without any identified suspect for the moment", according to Frédéric Nahon.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon went to the Vosges this summer to support Elisabeth Becker's widower, Willy Malaroda. At the time, he said he had previously received several threats at his home for his wife's activism in favor of the Insoumise. "They have the right to hate us, not to murder us, or to remain silent," Jean-Luc Mélenchon thundered, referring respectively to the "innumerable threats on social networks" from the far right, and to Macron, whose silence he denounced.
