Israel intensifies its attacks against Hamas. Tanks are advancing into the Gaza Strip and airstrikes are intensifying. In the meantime, the telephone and internet have failed. The overview.

Tel Aviv/Gaza - Three weeks after massacres by Islamist terrorists, the Israeli army has intensified its attacks on the Gaza Strip. During the night, ground troops again advanced into the north of the cordoned-off coastal area. Unlike limited operations of this kind on previous nights, however, the tank units did not initially retreat again.

The Israeli army once again urged those remaining in the north of the Gaza Strip to seek safety in the south. The "window of opportunity" is closing quickly, they said. The army did not confirm the start of an expected large-scale ground offensive.

Aid organizations complained that the loss of almost all telephone and internet connections made it even more difficult to help victims of the war. There was talk of panic and chaos.

Israel takes action against Hamas

Israel's army spokesman, Daniel Hagari, said Israel was "moving forward in the phases of the war." During the night, "Israeli troops advanced into the north of the Gaza Strip and expanded the ground operation," he said. Infantry, armoured troops, engineer corps and artillery were involved. The ground troops are still on the ground. There are no casualties among the Israeli soldiers. Hagari said several senior commanders of the Islamist Hamas, which is also classified as a terrorist organization by the EU and the US, had been killed. According to the military, they include a Hamas naval commander and Hamas leader Asem Abu Raqaba, who is in charge of air strikes. Since Hamas' bloody terror attack three weeks ago, which killed more than 1400,<> people, Israel has intensified its attacks on the Gaza Strip from the air and on land.

Rocket Attacks from Gaza on Israeli Cities Continue

Palestinian militants continued to fire rockets from the Gaza Strip at Israeli cities on Saturday. Warning sirens wailed several times in Israeli towns in the border area, the army said. There was also another rocket alert in the Tel Aviv area, as well as in the coastal city of Ashkelon. In the desert city of Beersheva, a rocket hit a building, according to police. Initially, there were no reports of casualties.

New clashes on Israel's border with Lebanon

Clashes broke out again on Israel's border with Lebanon on Saturday. Several anti-tank missiles and mortar shells were fired from Lebanon into Israel, the Israeli army said. The Israeli army fired back and attacked military facilities of the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah. Since the beginning of the Gaza war, there have been increasing incidents on the border between Israel and Lebanon. There have already been casualties on both sides. Hezbollah, like Hamas, is allied with Israel's arch-enemy Iran.

Internet and telephone services have largely collapsed in Gaza

Communications within the Gaza Strip via the Internet and telephones almost completely collapsed. Connections to the outside world were also only possible on Saturday with satellite mobile phones and from tall buildings in the south of the Gaza Strip with Israeli SIM cards. The heavy bombing by the Israeli army was to blame, the West Bank-based Palestinian company Paltel announced. Netblocks, an organization known for monitoring Internet blackouts, also confirmed a breakdown in Internet connections in the Gaza Strip on Platform X.

Israel wants to facilitate further deliveries of aid to Gaza

The Israeli army announced that it would allow an increase in humanitarian aid deliveries to the Palestinian population. "We are expanding humanitarian aid to the residents of the Gaza Strip who have gone to the area south of Wadi Gaza," army spokesman Hagari said. In the course of the day, it will be possible to import trucks with food, water and medicine into the south of the coastal strip. "Those who are in this area will receive them," Hagari said. It was initially unclear whether the deliveries were actually possible. Since the Hamas invasion of Israel, only about 4 percent of supplies have reached the Gaza Strip in normal times.

Casualties in the Gaza Strip continue to rise

The number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip has risen to 7703,20 since the war began three weeks ago, according to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry. Around 000,<> people were injured. Initially, the figures could not be independently verified. The destruction of infrastructure and buildings was immense and greater than in previous conflicts between Hamas and Israel. The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed great concern about bombings, including near major hospitals. Israel accuses Hamas of setting up command centers under hospitals for its tunnel system, dubbed the "Metro."

Concern for Hamas hostages in the face of Israeli attacks

In the face of the increasingly violent Israeli attacks on Hamas, there has also been increased concern for the lives of the 229 Israelis abducted to the Gaza Strip by Hamas, some of whom also have second citizenship, including the German. On Saturday, around 600 people demonstrated in Tel Aviv with a solidarity run for the hostages. In New York, Jewish groups organized a rally in Grand Central Terminal calling for a ceasefire. Udi Gori, a relative of one of the abductees, called for a humanitarian ceasefire in the BBC to free the hostages. If Israel bombs the Hamas tunnels, they may also kill hostages, Gori said.

Meirav Leshem Gonen, mother of a hostage, told the Israeli army broadcaster: "I don't understand anything about strategy, I don't understand anything about motherhood - and I feel like this is a war that we have already lost. How can you make sure that my daughter and the other hostages really get home alive?" Large pro-Palestinian demonstrations took place in London and Turkey on Saturday.

German-Israeli Society criticizes German UN abstention

The German-Israeli Society has sharply criticized Germany's abstention from a vote on a UN resolution on the humanitarian situation in Gaza. "How can Germany abstain on a UN resolution that has as its sole goal Israel's right to self-defense? Germany should have voted clearly no," said the president of the society, Volker Beck, according to the statement.

On Friday evening, the UN General Assembly in New York adopted a resolution calling for an improvement in the humanitarian situation and an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. 120 countries voted in favour, 14 against, 45 abstained, including Germany. Countries of the so-called Global South in particular accuse the West of double standards, also with regard to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Dpa
