Neuried's emissions are falling

2023-10-28T13:38:19.359Z

Highlights: Neuried's emissions are falling. Greenhouse gas emissions per capita were reduced from 3.9 tonnes in 2018 to 3.6 tonnes in 2020. The district of Munich has paid CO2 compensation not only for its own administration, but also for that of municipalities. One ton of CO2 is compensated with about 20 euros. At present, the Neuried administration still generates around 500 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. In the future, compensation would cost the municipality 10,000 euros per year.

The municipality of Neuried wants to become climate-neutral by 2035, so that its citizens only produce a climate-friendly level of greenhouse gases. It seems to be on the right track.

Neuried - Every two years, the district of Munich compiles a greenhouse gas balance sheet for municipalities, requesting data from suppliers, among other things. This is time-consuming, so the results for 2020 have only recently been available. However, as Neuried's climate advisor Dieter Maier (Greens) explained in the most recent municipal council meeting, this is very gratifying. For example, greenhouse gas emissions per capita were reduced from 3.9 tonnes in 2018 to 3.6 tonnes in 2020; In 2010, emissions were 4.6 tonnes per citizen per year. According to Maier, strong savings have been recorded among private households, whose emissions have fallen from 2.5 tonnes (2010) and 2.0 tonnes (2018) to 1.8 tonnes (2020). However, trade (down from 2.5 tonnes/2010 to 1.0 tonnes/2020) and municipal administration (down from 0.12 tonnes/2010 to 0.7 tonnes/2020) also contributed to the good result.

In terms of traffic, there are no specific surveys by the district for Neuried, Maier explained. According to statistical data, however, there was a slight decrease from 0.8 tonnes (2010) to 0.7 tonnes (2020) without taking the motorway into account.

Over the past three years, the district of Munich has paid CO2 compensation not only for its own administration, but also for that of municipalities. The 0.7 tons of greenhouse gas emissions of the Neuried administration were compensated for by these payments for climate projects, Maier explained, nominally making the administration climate-neutral. These compensation payments would continue in the future for the district administration and for the special-purpose associations for schools, but no longer for the individual municipalities.

However, the municipality has the option of continuing such compensation payments on its own through the district's "Future+" campaign, Maier explained. One ton of CO2 is compensated with about 20 euros. At present, the Neuried administration still generates around 500 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, so about 10,000 euros would have to be spent on compensation. This would then be used to finance international and district projects. However, there is also the option, for example, to work with CO2 industry certificates or to increase the municipality's own energy-saving subsidy program, according to the climate officer. "We now have to think about how we want to deal with it."
